Lucas and Janis

Lucas' Story

Life used to be very trying for Lucas.

“He’s had a heck of a time,” said his mom, Janis. “He’s been to nine different schools, started out nonverbal and was in intensive therapy for the first few years of his life.”

Lucas couldn’t get the services he needed in a public school. His family enrolled him in the autism services program at The Children’s Home of Cincinnati when he was in seventh grade. Now, he’s entering his sophomore year of high school and is transitioning back to public school.

“He fit in at The Children’s Home right away,” Janis said. “Once he started there, he gained social skills, made friends that he has to this day, and gained a lot of independence.”

Janis said that The Children’s Home was life-changing for her son.

“They treated my son like a person; not a diagnosis,” she said. “The staff there gives off this vibe and you can tell they genuinely care. They wouldn’t be there if they didn’t.”
